A closer look

At Qiba, we believe in using technology to create meaningful connections. When we were invited to collaborate on the Automat Sospeso project, we knew it was an opportunity to bring innovation, community, and solidarity together through cutting-edge vending technology.

Bringing an Artistic Vision to Life

A project by artist Leopold Kessler, in cooperation with HOLLY Kaffeesysteme GmbH, The Automat Sospeso aimed to challenge the concept of solidarity in an increasingly digitalized world. Inspired by the Neapolitan tradition of “caffè sospeso”—where a guest pays for an additional espresso that a stranger can later claim for free—this installation reimagined the practice in an automated, anonymous setting.

By the end of 2024, the coffee vending machine had been set up in the Tiroler Landestheater Forecourt, Innsbruck. It enabled people to pay it forward, storing money within the system for someone in need of a warm coffee. This initiative created a direct, tangible impact in a shared public space.

Qiba’s Role: Merging Art with Technology

As experts in IoT devices, centralized payment systems, and MDB technology for vending machines, Qiba took on the challenge of translating this vision into a functional reality. To make the project possible, we integrated our:
Unigate and MDB USB Standard devices, ensuring seamless communication between payment processing and vending operations.
Personalized software solution, enabling the sospeso functionality, securely storing payments, and dispensing free coffee when available.

We aim to bridge the gap between visionary ideas and existing technology, transforming ambitious concepts into practical, real-world solutions. With The Automat Sospeso, we demonstrated how engineering and creativity can converge to foster human connection, proving that even in a world of automation, solidarity can thrive.

Technology with a Human Touch

This project posed an important question: Can solidarity exist in a technologized, distanced society? The results showed that even without direct human contact, people were willing to contribute to a shared system of generosity. The vending machine became more than just a distributor of coffee — it became a symbol of community care and trust.

At Qiba, we are proud to have played a role in bringing this inspiring project to life. As we continue to innovate in the vending and payment technology space, we remain committed to creating solutions that don’t just work but make a difference.
